Millersville
Millersville, Maryland, is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County that has remained a relatively quiet crossroads village despite expanding residential and commercial development nearby. It lies just east of the interstate, mid-way between Annapolis and Baltimore. The substantial recreational opportunities of Chesapeake Bay lie just to the east of the community.

History

Millersville prospered when a rail line connecting Annapolis with a branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was routed through the area. When the Annapolis & Elkridge Railroad completed the rail line in 1840, it became one of the earliest rail lines in the United States. The Millersville post office became the first such facility to be built along the rail line.

Parks and Recreation

Those that own Millersville MD homes can enjoy the many recreational opportunities possible at Kinder Farm Park. The 288-acre facility has a 2.4-mile paved trail around the perimeter that is ideal for bikers, boarders and hikers. Several miles of nature trails meander through the park as well. Fisherman can try their luck here, and birders will find a wide variety of species to pursue. There's also a substantial playground and tot lot.

Attractions and Activities

The Childs Residence, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, was a focal point of the town for well over a century. In 1840, a one-and-a-half story building was constructed that first served as the Millersville post office and general store. A large, two-story addition was built in 1852. There's also an 1840s-era smokehouse on the grounds. Today, the structure is the home of the Anne Arundel County Trails program.

Events

The Anne Arundel County Fair is held to the south of Millersville every September. Fairgoers enjoy special events like the crowning of the Poultry Queen and the Arundel Idol talent competition. Carnival rides, live music, and livestock shows add variety to the fair. The fairgrounds also hosts other popular events, like June's Bullride Mania Rodeo.
