Severna Park

Severna Park, Maryland, is an affluent community of about 39,000 just north of Annapolis. This city in Anne Arundel County is 17 miles south of Baltimore and 39 miles east of Washington D.C. Interstate 97 runs north-south just to the west of town.

History

The community was originally called "Boone," and it prospered as a stop along a rail line operated by the Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad. In 1906, a community leader named Oscar Hatton held a contest to pick a new name for the community, and "Severna Park" was the winner. In 1990, the old railroad right-of-way became the Baltimore and Annapolis Rail Trail.

Parks and Recreation

Kinder Farm Park is a large, 288-acre park with many recreational options. It is situated just to the northeast of Severna Park. Those with young children can head to the tot lot and the large playground, while cyclists and hikers will head to the 2.4 mile perimeter trail. Miles of nature trails are also contained within the facility. This is also a great park for birders and fishermen.

Attractions and Activities

The Severna Park Community Center offers residents a wide array of recreational opportunities along with numerous classes in dance and the arts. There's an aquatics center with main pool and therapy pool. The fitness center offers a weight room and state-of-the-art equipment. Children participate in summer camps offered at the rec center. Nutrition and weight loss classes are also offered.

The trail has about an 8-foot wide paved surface and is in good condition. The total length is 13 miles between Annapolis and Glen Burnie, MD. Once you reach  the northern terminus, a short connector path will take you over to the recently completed BWI Trail

The southern half of the trail cuts through some nice suburban neighborhoods. As you head farther north, the terrain becomes much more urban. The path goes right past Marley Station Mall before taking you into downtown Glen Burnie. At this point, the B&A right-of-way is taken over by Baltimore Light Rail. However, you can continue biking another 12 miles by using the new BWI Trail network

Events

Residents can look forward to numerous festivals in the Annapolis area every year. In early June, there is the Annapolis Arts Crafts and Wine Festival. Over 25 Maryland wineries participate in this special event at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Over 200 artisans from around the country display sculptures, paintings, custom jewelry, fiber art and more. The Kids' art area includes musical, theatrical and dance performances. The festival is within walking distance of the many 18th century structures in colonial Annapolis.
